The situation

The paramedics stop working at 13:52. Your operations lead is standing beside you. Two of the man's colleagues are in the corridor. Phones are out at the far end of the hall. The plenary is due to start in 38 minutes.

First moves and what each one costs

• Call the police to attend, screen the area and leave everything exactly as it is, take his colleagues to a private room with a staff member, and hold the plenary until you know more — The scene is preserved for the police and the coroner, dignity is protected, and the people closest to him are not left in a corridor. You have bought yourself the time to think.
• Keep the programme running on time to avoid alarming attendees — The plenary starts while a body is still on site and rumours move faster than your programme. Staff are asked questions they have no answer to.
• Announce the death to all attendees straight away — Told before the family and before the authorities confirm anything. His colleagues hear it over a PA system. Speed here is a harm.

• Any death on site is a police matter, even when the cause looks natural — call them immediately
• Nothing moves and nobody is moved until the police and the coroner release the scene
