The situation
Lights cut. Music stops. The room goes pitch black except for phone screens. Murmurs become louder. Servers freeze mid-pour. Your radio crackles: the venue says it's a grid failure, ETA unknown.
First moves and what each one costs
- Grab the battery megaphone, take the stage, calmly explain the situation and ask everyone to stay seated — Your voice cuts through the dark. Anxiety drops. Guests start joking. You've taken control of the room.
- Wait 60 seconds to see if power returns before saying anything — Panic builds. Some guests stand and head for exits in the dark. A glass shatters.
- Order an immediate evacuation through the nearest exits — Guests stumble in the dark. Two minor falls. Power returns 90 seconds later — evacuation was unnecessary and chaotic.
Preparation notes for this situation
- Always confirm venue backup generator capacity in writing
- Issue torches or glow-sticks to staff during the pre-event briefing for blackout scenarios — never open flame
- Pre-script a 'calm voice' announcement for emergencies
- Keep at least one battery megaphone at the AV booth
