The situation
The CEO corners you in the hallway, red-faced. 'That panelist trashed our entire industry. We're done. We're leaving in 10 minutes and you can keep our money.' Two of their team are already pulling on coats.
First moves and what each one costs
- Pull them into a private room, listen for 5 full minutes without defending, then propose a stage right-of-reply tomorrow morning — Anger drains. They feel heard. They accept the right-of-reply slot and stay.
- Immediately apologize for the panelist and promise to remove them from the program — You've thrown your panelist under the bus. Word spreads. Two other panelists threaten to leave.
- Defend the panelist's right to free speech and tell the CEO to calm down — CEO walks out with delegation. Cameras catch it. Sponsorship is gone.
Preparation notes for this situation
- Brief panelists in writing about sponsor sensitivities — but never censor honest dialogue
- Have a sponsor liaison physically present whenever sponsors are on site
- Pre-agree an escalation path with sponsors for editorial disputes
