The System Has to Work
principle — attributed to Amy Calvert
Calvert traces her understanding of hospitality as a systems problem to waiting tables at Bentley's and Santa Fe while at the University of Maryland. The irreducible core she identified: you are part of a system, you need good relationships with the bartenders and the kitchen line, and what the guest experiences is the product of how those relationships function. Solo performance fails under load. The event that looks effortless has, behind it, a set of human relationships that have been maintained, tested, and aligned before anyone walked through the door. This is a principle she carried from restaurant work into convention sales, and from convention sales into institutional leadership.
