Presence of mind is the precondition for presence in the room.
principle — attributed to Cheryl Cecchetto
Cecchetto's diagnostic for what it takes to work in the event business is presence and presence of mind. The two are related and distinct. Presence is the visible quality of attention the producer brings to the room. Presence of mind is the internal capacity to read the whole room, make eye contact across it, and assure the client through excellent communication that their event is fully understood and supported. Both are required. Producers with presence but no presence of mind look engaged and miss what is happening. Producers with presence of mind but no presence absorb the room but fail to project the assurance the client needs. The combination is the operational unit.
For event producers, agency leads, and any client-facing role that requires both visible engagement and internal awareness. The principle is most useful as a self-diagnostic for producers who are strong in one mode but weaker in the other.
