An alarmed Drury client once complained that attendees were moving the furniture. Chris told them this was a great sign. It meant the attendees felt comfortable in the space, that they owned it, and that they would do what they wanted to do. The reframe inverts the typical event-team instinct, which treats moved furniture as a failure of layout. The Drurys see it as evidence of engagement. Attendees who grab chairs, gather at whiteboards, and rearrange the space to their needs are doing what social spaces are supposed to enable. Spaces that prevent rearrangement also prevent the engagement that justified building them in the first place.
For event teams and venue managers thinking about how participants interact with designed spaces. The observation is most useful as a corrective when the team's instinct is to enforce the original layout.
