Events are platforms for the organization's three-dimensional self.
observation — attributed to David Stark
The not-for-profit gala used to be a glamorous opportunity for people to buy a table and have the money go to the organization. Stark sees today's nonprofit events as something different. They are platforms through which the organization shares its message, tells its story, makes new friends, reinforces existing ones, and puts into three dimensions who it actually is. The shift is structural. The event is no longer the fundraising mechanism with a story attached. The story is the event, and the fundraising is downstream of how persuasively the organization has put itself into the room.
For nonprofit leaders, fundraising professionals, and event designers working on cause-driven gatherings. The observation is most useful as a frame for organizations whose events are still optimized for ticket revenue rather than narrative impact.
