Constraints are creative fuel.
principle — attributed to David Stark
Stark is direct about budget reality. You cannot tell from looking at a David Stark Design project whether the budget was large or small. Some of his best projects have come out of having many limitations. The principle inverts the assumption that creative quality scales with budget. Larger budgets produce more options, which often produces more decoration and less clarity. Smaller budgets force a single, defensible choice, and the discipline of that choice often produces work that reads as more confident. Designers who treat constraints as obstacles produce one kind of work. Designers who treat them as fuel produce another.
For agencies, designers, and clients negotiating event budgets. The principle is most useful when budget pressure threatens scope; the right response is often to do fewer things more sharply, not the same plan less expensively.
