Recognition is a coalition-building tool. Use it like one.
technique — attributed to Edie Fraser
WBC does recognition and celebration every day, in every way they can. The Trailblazers Award honors people like Judy Woodruff and Geena Davis. Companies that disclose DEI data publicly get a public list. The named recognition is not ceremonial. It changes incentives. Coalition members who would otherwise compete for press have a reason to participate in the coalition because the coalition is the source of the recognition they want. The technique requires consistency and credibility. Recognition that gets handed out indiscriminately stops mattering; recognition that is reserved and specific becomes a currency.
For advocacy organizations and industry associations building coalition membership. The technique is most effective when the recognition includes peer visibility, not just plaques.
