Convening vs. novelty
distinction — attributed to Lee Brian Schrager
What festivals no longer do well is novelty. The category is saturated, expensive, and professionalized. What they still do exceptionally well is convene. Suppliers, chefs, media, sponsors, distributors, and consumers occupy the same physical narrative for a few charged days. That function has no obvious substitute.
