Survey fatigue is a misdiagnosis of friction fatigue.
observation — attributed to Mark Brewster
At a London industry conference, a speaker asked the room who liked completing surveys. Nobody raised a hand. The speaker took that as evidence and moved on. Brewster sees the question as broken. Nobody likes completing surveys. Nobody likes registration forms, jet lag, app downloads, or booking travel either. Friction is friction. But if the question becomes who likes having their voice heard, every hand goes up. The fatigue is not with the survey itself. It is with the inbox flood and the absence of a credible promise that the answers will move anything. Fix the promise and the fatigue dissolves.
For organizers explaining low response rates as a structural ceiling. Particularly relevant when the team has not done the upstream work of promoting the survey as a feedback loop people benefit from.
