Networking environments quickly develop social clusters where attendees unconsciously filter who they approach. Appearance, confidence, and perceived status determine who gets included in a conversation, regardless of what the program states about openness. Researchers describe the pattern as lookism, and it appears even in gatherings explicitly designed to encourage cross-cutting connection. The hierarchy is invisible to the people benefiting from it and immediate to the people excluded by it.
