The "party planner" label misunderstands the work.
distinction — attributed to Andrew Roby
The events industry has long maintained a quiet hierarchy in which trade-show producers occupy the top and social-event planners sit further down, often reduced to a phrase that signals lower seriousness. The hierarchy is misplaced. The skills required to design weddings, milestones, and family gatherings are the same skills the corporate side now scrambles to learn: empathy, observation, emotional intelligence, and the management of intimacy and identity at scale. The label was always an underestimate.
The reframing for an industry that has historically segmented its own talent by event type rather than by capability.
