Earning the Room
principle — attributed to Colja Dams
An audience that is frightened, suffering, or otherwise has every rational reason to withhold its attention will nonetheless give it to you if you earn it correctly. Dams learned this performing magic in German children's hospitals as a teenager, in front of rooms where nothing about the circumstance was in his favor. What transfers between a performer and an audience in that moment is not illusion. It is something genuinely given and received, and it is the same thing that transfers in a well-engineered corporate event or a well-run dealer conference, at whatever scale the stage has grown to.
