Did all the air just get sucked out of the room?
technique — attributed to Dr. Wayne Pernell
Pernell tells a story about an accidental intervention. He was the fly on the wall at an executive team meeting, head down, taking notes. He blurted out a thought he had not meant to voice. Is it just me, or did all the air just get sucked out of the room. The vice presidents swiveled. The president took the question, paused, and asked it back to the room. The vice president next to Pernell, who had been sitting like a chastised child, confirmed it. The president said, then we have some work to do. The moment opened a communication channel that had been closed for years. The technique is operational. The skilled coach names what the room is actually experiencing in the moment, in plain language, and lets the naming do the work.
For executive coaches, consultants, and leaders who can speak honestly in difficult rooms. The technique is most useful when the room's silent dynamics are blocking the work and someone needs to name them.
